First Take Fridays: spoken word

Description

I'm the kind of person who likes to read poetry and fiction out loud to myself and occasionally to someone else. I really cherish the oral tradition of storytelling and spoken word. I don't expect everyone to read like Maya Angelou or a trained thespian but I do like to hear people read who appreciate and revere the power of the word transformed by speech and sound.

Every Friday I will feature prerecorded selected readers (occasionally that will be me) reading whatever they want to the blogosphere and podcast world. There are only two rules. Written pieces have to be under 4 minutes long and they have to be done in one take. I don't care if there's traffic, barking dogs, demolition, crying babies or if they break down in laughter or tears. One take will be all they get. So join me for 3 minutes or so each Friday won't you? It'll be like short attention span NPR.

Dance Me to The End of Love

I was listening to my i-Tunes library tonight. I decided to play the albums I had purchased a few days ago. One album was Barton Hollow by The Civil Wars. One of the bonus tracks was a cover of Mr. Cohen's song. I have really fallen for this duo's voices, connection, and music. They sang it...and sang it well. After playing it for the second time, I felt the urge to share those lyrics. I feel honored to be sharing in the honesty of words.

Light on at The Tastee Freeze

Sometimes the things that preoccupy our inner thoughts, that capture our imaginations, that give us hope as we push through discomfiting and or miserable circumstances are not always prayer or hope for world peace or the promise of reuniting with a loved one. Sometimes it's just food. Lord knows, my fixation with food is as real and hope giving as any religious faith. LOL! I think Richard Brautigan understood this, in addition to numerous other seemingly odd things that sustain the human spirit which is only one of the many reasons I love his work.
"Light on at The Tastee Freeze" is from a collection of short stories by Brautigan entitled "The Tokyo Montana Express." Enjoy.
