I know. This is the second story I've read about food. This one is an excerpt from the short story "The Year of Spaghetti"by another one of my favorite authors, Haruki Murakami. And as you may begin to see it's about much more than spaghetti. Food features very prominently in much Murakami's writing. Inevitably someone who is not a professional chef or someone who has even spoken about any preference for food previously in the narrative is listening to jazz and going into great detail about the preparation of something tasty. But it's always about something else, and the preparation and consumption of food are like a path to getting there.
I broke my own format rules and went over 4 minutes long on this one. 4 minutes, 40 seconds.
Enjoy.
Description
I'm the kind of person who likes to read poetry and fiction out loud to myself and occasionally to someone else. I really cherish the oral tradition of storytelling and spoken word. I don't expect everyone to read like Maya Angelou or a trained thespian but I do like to hear people read who appreciate and revere the power of the word transformed by speech and sound.
Every Friday I will feature prerecorded selected readers (occasionally that will be me) reading whatever they want to the blogosphere and podcast world. There are only two rules. Written pieces have to be under 4 minutes long and they have to be done in one take. I don't care if there's traffic, barking dogs, demolition, crying babies or if they break down in laughter or tears. One take will be all they get. So join me for 3 minutes or so each Friday won't you? It'll be like short attention span NPR.
